- The women of the house perform the Dhanteras Puja after seeing the star in the evening. Men can also take part in the puja but it is optional.
- In order to perform the puja, devotees place Four-wicked diyas which contain the cotton wicks on the small stool. Also place cowry shells along with the diyas.
- The diyas are considered as Yamdeep as they are lit to offer prayers to Lord Yamaraj. This puja also offers respect to ancestors of the house.
- Now they place the copper vessel near the diyas. One should sprinkle the water from the vessel around the diyas.
- Devotees perform the puja using rice, roli and coin. They also offer sweets to the Lord in order to seek the blessings. Then, they chant the mantras and do the parikrama around the diyas.
- They apply Tilak to their forehead. Then they place the diyas outside the main entrance. One should keep the diyas burning during the night to honour Yama in the custom of deep daan.
