As per the ancient scriptures of Hindu religion, the ashes of the dead people are to be immersed in the holy waters of the river Ganga for the ultimate salvation of the dead person. But the religious organisation named Ganga Sabha, who looks after the religious matters related to Ganga, has made a strong objection to the act of immersion of ashes at any other Ghat of Ganga in Haridwar. According to the organisation, it is mentioned in the Vedic scriptures and Hindu religious texts that to bring salvation the immersion of ashes should only take place at the ‘Brahma Kund’ in Har-ki-Pauri and the ‘Sita Ghat‘ in Kankhal and not in any other Ghats of the Ganga river. Hence they have demanded a strict action from the administration and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the priests who are “doers of wrong practice” and are fooling the public by providing this ritual services at other Ghats of Ganga in Haridwar.
On the other hand, many social activists and organisations hold just an opposite opinion on this topic. Therefore, this has now become a major point of conflict between many organisations and people in Haridwar.
